What do you think are the biggest surprises of the NFL season now that most teams have entered the second quarter of their seasons? Here are 10 that stand out to me, but there are many, many more:

10. Bay City teams rolling. The Oakland Raiders are 3-2 and appear dangerous. The San Francisco 49ers are 4-1 and are clearly the best team in the NFC West.

9. Cam Newton is all that. The top pick in the draft came into the league with a lot of doubters and even more questions. All he has done his rookie year is instantly become one of the most exciting players in the NFL.

8. Jets’ ground and pound grounded and pounded. The New York Jets can still be a good football team. But with an offense in disarray thanks in large part to offensive line woes, this 2-3 hardly looks like the Super Bowl contender coach Rex Ryan promised.

At issue: As much as we can break down games into statistics, especially baseball, how limited are numbers ability to tell us about a complete player?

In other words: What players are better than their stats? Derek Jeter in his prime immediately comes to mind. Ben Roethlisberger is another. What other athletes do you think rise about the level of their numbers?

Apparently, Sammy Sosa has not yet retire . Who knew?

The most interesting thing to his sit-down with ESPN: “I will calmly wait for my induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Don’t I have the numbers to be inducted?”

Uh, sure. So does Rafael Palmeiro. And there’s the problem.

We know what Palmeiro did. We know what Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens did.

Good, not great …And that’s ok with them. The sad truth of the Mets ball club right now is that with these owners, as long as they do enough to keep people coming into Citi Field, they don’t care about winning championships. If we had an owner in the mold of George Steinbrenner, Manny Ramirez would already be a Met. The Mets could make themselves the unquestioned best team in the National League if they were to do one more thing, and that’s signing Manny Ramirez. Unfortunately for Mets fans our beloved owners don’t care about being the best, they just care about being good enough.

It’s hard to call Fred and Jeff Wilpon cheap when the Mets will have the highest payroll in the NL, but it’s easier once you look uptown and see the other New York team spending 70 million more dollars. If you’re a Mets fan it probably made your stomach turn to see Jeff Wilpon blame Omar Minaya for not wanting Manny Ramirez, when you know full well that Minaya would sign Ramirez tomorrow if given the go ahead from Fred and Jeff. If it isn’t a money issue, then we have to question whether or not Minaya actually still has full authority when it comes to baseball related moves, because his affinity for Ramirez has never been a secret.

Why do we hate? Is it from pure dislike of the rival fans? Or is it because of winning? Winning does fuel hatred!

Why do fans across the country hate the Yankees, Red Sox or Mets? Or all the New York sports teams for that matter? Do rival New Yorkers hate one another so much just because we cheer for the opposing squad? Why hate the Cowboys, Patriots, or Raiders? The Lakers, etc. You get the point!

Speaking from a New York state of mind....I believe everyone not in New York hates the New York teams because we spend money, lure all the free agents, and compete to win. I believe everyone hates New Yorkers because it is labeled by so many the “greatest city in the World”. Is that what fuels the hatred? Just because the city that “never sleeps”, or the “Big Apple”, has so many knick names, does it drive residents from other states insane? New Yorkers are wonderful, passionate, opinionated, and stubborn when it comes to their sports. Just like every other fanatic in the world. So many of you hate Philadelphians, or Bostonians; why?

The Phillies ended a 28-year title drought, and a 25-year barren streak for Philadelphia, with its World Series win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Phils fans deserve this.

What other long-suffering but loyal fan base(s) is most deserving of a title? These are the fans who show up (read: not the Miami Dolphins) and remain vocal yet still get denied year after year.

Oh, and don’t say the Chicago Cubs. Too easy.
